Civic Trust Success for The Waterways, Great Yarmouth
We are delighted to share that The Waterways in Great Yarmouth has been recognised with two Civic Trust Awards:
The Selwyn Goldsmith Award for Universal Design Highly Commended, acknowledging outstanding inclusive design within a sensitive, Grade II listed landscape.
Civic Trust Highly Commended, honouring its heritage-led regeneration and sustainable future as a much-loved local destination.
With Great Yarmouth Borough Council as client, the project was led by Allen Scott as Landscape Architect and Lead Consultant, and delivered by Blakedown Landscapes as main contractor, together with the following collaborative team - cost consultants Andrew Morton Associates, structural and civil engineers The Morton Partnership, technical delivery architects Foster Wilson Size, conservation architects Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust, and funding support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Blakedown was responsible for delivering a wide range of restoration and enhancement works across the site. These included the removal of old extensions to the Boating Lake Island Café, reinstatement of garden beds and excavated rockeries, restoration of the pergolas, and extensive concrete and paving repairs. All works were carried out with care to retain the site’s historic character while improving its accessibility and functionality.
The project involved the community in enhancing and interpreting this unique community facility, tourist attraction and heritage asset—boosting civic pride and reinforcing the Waterways’ value to Great Yarmouth
