A Royal Restoration: Greenwich Park Revealed Featured in April's Pro Landscaper

What does it take to deliver landscape works in an historic park like Greenwich?

At Greenwich Park, delivering this complex, multi-disciplinary project was about more than following plans and specifications. It required an understanding of the park’s history, its ecological needs, and the challenges the landscape presented. This project, part of the Greenwich Park Revealed initiative, involved restoring and enhancing a Grade I Listed landscape that plays a vital role in London's Royal Parks.

Blakedown Landscapes worked alongside The Royal Parks charity and the design team to tackle four major work packages, including restoring the Grand Ascent, enhancing the General Wolfe public realm, improving the Pavilion Café area, and refreshing Blackheath Gate. Each area required tailored solutions that respected both the historical significance and modern-day needs of the park.

One key challenge was stabilising the Grand Ascent, which involved a combination of earthworks, re-profiling, and tree planting. When heavy rainfall threatened to derail progress, Blakedown adapted quickly, working with the team to implement a turf solution for long-term stability. Similarly, the Parterre Banks restoration required sourcing the right soil blend, which Blakedown resolved through close collaboration with the supplier to ensure the park’s ecological balance was maintained.

Through close collaboration with The Royal Parks, Blakedown was able to balance historical preservation with modern infrastructure, ensuring the park’s lasting legacy while enhancing its accessibility for future generations.
