Building A Sustainable Future - Insights from Pro Landscaper's Green Issue
Sustainability in the landscaping industry is about designing, constructing, and maintaining outdoor environments in a way that minimises environmental impact, promotes biodiversity, and supports healthy ecosystems. As businesses increasingly look to embed sustainability into their operations, practical strategies for reducing waste and making responsible material choices are key.
Blakedown was pleased to contribute to Pro Landscaper’s Green Issue, joining experts from across the industry to discuss best practices for integrating sustainability into business agendas. Our focus? Sustainable construction processes - specifically, how careful resource management can lead to meaningful environmental benefits.
A crucial aspect of sustainable landscaping is ensuring that materials are sourced, used, and retained as efficiently as possible. In our projects, we prioritise reusing and recycling site-won materials, reducing waste, and sourcing from responsible suppliers. For example, at Greenwich Park Revealed, extensive earthworks enabled the regrading and reuse of thousands of cubic metres of soil, preventing unnecessary removal and reducing waste. At Bedfont Lakes, we repurposed crushed concrete from demolition works to stabilise areas beneath the lake, in footpaths, and as part of a blended soil mix for low-fertility grasslands.
By making sustainability a core consideration from the outset, landscape businesses can significantly reduce their environmental impact while still delivering high-quality, enduring landscapes. While these are just a few examples, they reflect a broader commitment across our business to incorporating sustainability into every project.
